September 2009

The Open day held on 6th September was the best ever with
around 1000 people attending, the weather was quite
kind to us and a good time was had by all.
We are so grateful to everyone who made the day
so sucessful, it couldn't happen without you !
The West Lancs Gundog display team were very popular
as was Cuthbert and Fiona's Agility display and the
fun dog show kindly judged by one of our vets "Hilary" from
Rufford Veterinary Group.

We had reptiles, skunks, birds of prey and ferrets on
display with their handlers, happy to discuss all aspects
of their care as well as many stalls and all our residents
for everyone to meet.
The volunteers organising the car parking were kept
very busy as it took alot of thought to ensure everyone
could leave without hundreds of cars having to move first.

Thank you to Ian and Stuart from ASC multi media who
compiled the video below so we can all remember the day.

And a big thank you to all who helped and supported us.
This is vital if we are to continue to rehabilitate, rehome,
release back to the wild or provide a safe haven for injured,
abused or unwanted animals.

Previous News

Chilli and Pepper are two elderley female Chichillas
that we have just taken into our care.
They had lived with the same owner all their lives but when she was evicted
they were in need of a new home so a young man offered to take them.
He had them for a couple of months but then found he was allergic
to the sand they need to bath in so once again these
two old ladies found themselves homeless.
Michelle one of our Trustees will foster them for the rest
of their lives but we feel like we owe them a large cage to jump round
in as their present cage is far to small and they have
become habitual fur chewers.
Does anyone have an extra large Chinchillla cage they could
donate to these cuddly pair so they can spend the rest of their days
in the luxury that they deserve

We are now getting very busy with mums and kittens,
stranded wildlife and loads of unwanted pets.

A lady called with 3 baby hedgehogs her dog had found under a hedge.
She had taken them inside but didn't realise they needed additional
heat and thought "kitten milk" from the supermarket would be fine.
After 24 hours one died so she thought she had better find someone
who knew what they were doing ! So at 8 0pm at night we were
presented with 2 approximately 12 day old hoglets, so cold that
it took 2 hours to get their body temperatures up to give them
their 1st proper feed for over 24 hours.Sandra one of
our fosterers took charge of them at 10 30pm that night
and I'm delighted to say they are coming on very well now.

A "first" for us was a baby stoat who's home in an old shed was
destroyed and set on fire, fortunately the owners saw him
and rescued him just in time. We don't want to think about
the rest of the litter and hope there wasn't any.
After a few days of feeding and tlc with Michelle he is now on his way to
a Sanctuary in Cheshire who have special release facilities.

We also took in a Hedgehog and 3 hog lets aged about 5 days
who's home was destroyed accidentally. Unfortunately the garden
owners did not know not to handle the young and this could have
had a disastrous ending with the mother savaging her young.
However luck was on our side and she settled in our
nursery and they are all coming on very well.

We recently had a call from a gentleman who had taken charge of his
sons 4ft Milk Snake. Due to his lack of knowledge with reptiles he was very concerned about the snakes welfare and was desperate to rehome it. Reptiles are specialist animals and not something we usually become involved in but on this occasion Michelle offered to help as she keeps a small number of reptiles herself. The snake was delivered to the Sanctuary and at present is being fostered at Michelle's home.

One of our helpers Sandra also took 6 small ducklings that the mum
had a abandoned and they too are coming on well and
will be released back to the wild later in the year.

Press Release 10th April 2009

Woodlands Animal Sanctuary has also been drastically affected by the recession and desperately needs funding to help the abandoned and abused animals they have been caring for, Amanda Allinson a Woodlands volunteer explains their situation, “Unlike other animal rescue centres, Woodlands is mainly run by volunteers, so any donations go directly to feed and care for the animals we nurture back to health.  We know it’s a hard time for everyone, but we need the support of the local community more than ever to enable us to continue the work we have been doing for many years.  It’s difficult to turn away any animal that is in need of shelter or in distress and with Easter on the way we are hoping to help more unwanted animals”.
Amanda stated,” We have many adorable Rabbits in our care that require sponsorship and we have Guinea pigs looking for home’s who appreciate their sociable nature. We also want to highlight two cats that have been with us for a long time, Minty and Whispa, who both deserve a forever family”.

February 2009

All is very quiet on the homing front, funds are getting critical again as several of the cats we admitted have required ongoing expensive veterinary treatment, so we are nervous of committing to any more rescues until we have more reserves to fund the 250 animals in our care at the present time.
.
We now have a picture Gallery that is on going
so any ideas are welcome

We are practicing with short videos on you tube so supporters who cannot get to
our events or visit can get a feel as to what
we strive to do and see the animals, we are new to this but learning fast and will gradually add more and more when time permits.

We hope to show you our Aviaries housing unwanted parrots, budgie's,finches and canaries as well as quails and guinea pigs.
We also have several paddocks housing ducks, geese and chickens all with varying sizes of ponds and warm housing for cold nights.
Our rescued sheep and goats share 4 acres of grazing land with 2 horses and again have cosy safe housing at night.

On another subject we are told that the more links we have the better this site will be viewed, any of you have website we can swap links with ?.

More news soon please keep visiting.

Happy New Year from all at Woodlands.

Our Christmas Fair was a great success and we raised desperately needed funds
alas not enough to last very long !
Thanks to all who helped and all who supported us on the day especially
Jean Alexander who very kindly gave up her day for the animals.

We still have quite a few Raffle tickets left for our grand draw in February
so if anyone wants to buy any or sell on some we will be most grateful, please call the Shelter to have them dispatched.
Finding new homes for our cats and rabbits in care is proving quite
difficult and this in turn stops us admitting anymore for which the demand is
greater than ever, so please spread the word !
